Congratulations on your retirement, Barb!

Manna Cafe & Bakery is a warm, welcoming place, tucked into the Lakewood Plaza Shopping Center on Madison's North side. Over the years (previously as owners of the Collins House Bed and Breakfast, and, since 2005, as owners of Manna Cafe & Bakery), Barb and Mike Pratzel have devoted their lives to bringing their hospitality and delicious food to people. They've also been a big part of Madison Originals, hosting meetings and participating in events like Feed the Need.

As of 2018, Barb is retiring. Mike and the rest of the Manna crew will still be serving up their wonderful lemon bars, muffins, quiche, and other goodies. While we're going to miss seeing Barb at our meetings and events, we wish her well in all her future endeavors and look forward to keeping in touch.

Savoring Success: Short Stack Eatery supports Porchlight

This past Tuesday, December 12, marked Short Stack Eatery's third annual benefit dinner.

For one evening only, Short Stack transformed into a fine dining restaurant, with the staff donating their time to prepare and serve a special four-course meal. Attendees were entertained by James the Magician and local celebrity Peter Kraus as emcee. All proceeds from the event went to Porchlight to help them continue in their efforts to provide housing, counseling, and employment to Madison's homeless population.

Thank you, Short Stack Eatery, and all the other local businesses and individuals who helped to contribute to make this event a success!

Eat Local, Give Local for Dane Buy Local recap

Eat Local, Give Local Recap

by Colin Murrary, Dane Buy Local Executive Director

As the year comes to an end, Dane Buy Local is reflecting on the accomplishments
during 2017. One of our fundraisers was the Eat Local, Give Local event in partnership with
Madison Originals resulted in robust numbers this year. The fundraiser brought awareness to
Madison’s unique independent restaurants, as well as to the critical importance of supporting
and sustaining our local economy. Madison Originals’ mission to promote our community’s
local, diverse, independent dining establishments has a symbiotic resonance with Dane Buy
Local’s mission. Thus, the “Eat Local Give Local” campaign was born to highlight the
participating restaurants and to acknowledge the educational outreach work that Dane Buy
Local does within the community.

Dane Buy Local thanks the following restaurants for donating a portion of their sales
from the August 24 event: Dotty Dumpling’s Dowry, Essen Haus, The Tipsy Cow, Daisy Café &
Cupcakery, Brasserie V, Lombardino’s, Bonfyre American Grille, Liliana’s Restaurant, Quivey’s
Grove, Imperial Garden West, Banzo, The Roman Candle and Charlie’s on Main.

Dane Buy Local invested over $17,000 in media advertising trade dollars to the event
this year. The “Eat Local Give Local” campaign generated total sales of over $46,000 with a
total donation of $4675 to Dane Buy Local. This will allow Dane Buy Local to continue to provide outreach to our members and the public in the community. We appreciate for each of the participating restaurants and are grateful for your support of our mission.

Get to know Yola's Cafe

Our newest member, Yola's Cafe, was recently featured on NBC15's The Morning Show. Click here to watch.

Here's the Yola’s Café story, below, used with permission, from their website:

Yola’s Café is named for the grandmother of owner Lance Ratze. A phenomenal cook, Yola used her immeasurable gift for hospitality and cooking to gather her large family together every weekend. She would cater to them, serving wonderful meals made from scratch – roast beef dinners, waffles, baked pies, malts, and other favorite dishes. Her home was practically a restaurant; she bought used restaurant equipment to be able to make enough food for so many people that they ate around a ping pong table in her basement. Yola’s home was always a place for people to gather, relax, and enjoy life and each other; she would entice everyone with food. Less than 5 feet tall, Yola never sat still and she was in constant motion. The family revolved around her home and her heart until she passed away in 2008. After working in restaurants, Yola always wanted her own café but was unable to realize that dream.

Yola’s Café is intended to provide the same atmosphere of hospitality that Grandma Yola showered upon her family and friends every weekend. Stop by for some baked goods made from scratch in house, a warm cup of coffee, soup, or sandwich, and some conversation. It’s the café Yola always dreamed of, and we hope you enjoy it as much as she would.

Mission Statement
Yola’s Cafe is an unconventional and uplifting cafe that provides an oasis of calm in your busy life. Whether you stay for two minutes or two hours, come for a business meeting or a mom’s morning out, our aim is to give you more than just great coffee, homemade baked goods, and fresh food.

We want to help you make the business and personal connections that give meaning and purpose to your life. Yola’s Cafe is an inviting gathering place for neighbors and friends, and when you’re here, you’re family.

We hope you’ll notice the subtle differences that make our coffee shop unique, from the faint strains of faith-filled music in the air to the inspired conversations all around. Yola’s is your friendly local family owned cafe with something for everyone.

The perfect place for specialty drinks, family & friends!
Slip away from your day and enjoy a relaxing break at Yola’s Café. The selection of coffee, tea, and specialty drinks is worth stopping in for, but the wonderful food, wickedly good treats that are baked here, and the comfortable atmosphere are what will keep Yola’s on your mind. It’s a great place to meet friends or business colleagues; you can bring your laptop and plug in or use our free wi-fi, or bring the kids for a play date.

Breakfast is served all day, including a daily special, and we offer a delectable lunch too – even lunch boxes to go. Our specialty any time of day is a Golden Malted Belgium Waffle that will stop you in your tracks – with or without toppings – but our baked oatmeal has legions of fans. Sometimes we add new items, like the Harvester sandwich. There is always a soup of the day (seasonal) and choices of salad. Vegetarians have plenty of options, too.

Specialty drinks include frappes, smoothies, natural sodas, and a long list of items such as the Nutty Irishman (espresso, steamed milk, Irish cream and hazelnut).  While you indulge, let your children have fun in the play area that contains a play kitchen from Whoops!, a variety of Melissa and Doug playsets, chalkboards, and games.

A look back at Harvest Dinner for Hunger

Madison Originals restaurants provided the five courses for this year's Harvest Dinner for Hunger in support of The River Food Pantry.

Brasserie V provided appetizers, Porta Bella Restaurant served up their famous Porta Salad, Liliana's Restaurant shared their butternut squash soup, CIRC (in the Concourse Hotel) supplied short ribs (or polenta for vegetarians) and Daisy Cafe and Cupcakery served a variety of mini cupcakes.

Harvest Dinner for Hunger raised close to $60,000, plus an additional $20,000 match given by an anonymous donor.

Wow! What a great event! See you next year!

Get to know Parthenon Gyros

Photo and Parthenon Gyros story, below, from their website, used with permission:

It All Began in 1972 with Greek Food and the American Dream

Parthenon Gyros Restaurant is a third generation Greek family owned and operated award winning Madison institution, making handcrafted Gyros since 1972.

t all began when our parents and grandparents immigrated to the United States from Greece with only a few dollars, some centuries-old Greek family recipes and a big dream – to make it in this wonderful land of opportunity.  Their passion for delicious and simple made-from-scratch Greek food naturally led them into restaurants where they worked tirelessly year after year, eventually paving the way to the famous Parthenon Gyros.

Parthenon was the first to bring the Gyro (pronounced YEER-o) to the great state of Wisconsin and we’re proud to be one of the only gyro restaurants left in the country to still make our own Gyros (and sauce) entirely by hand from simple ingredients. It’s the real deal, folks - no fillers, no preservatives, no chemicals – just real food done right!

To make our delicious handcrafted Gyros, we grind whole cuts of premium beef and lamb and mix in simple, natural spices (we even grind our own peppercorn!). We then form our gyros into their classic cones, which slowly rotate on our rotisserie fire grills until the meat is seared to sizzling perfection. Then we slice it off in thin, juicy layers, pile it high on grilled pita bread and top off the deliciousness with fresh sliced onions, tomatoes and our mouthwatering, house-made tzatziki sauce, which we still make the old-fashioned way, by crafting our very own Greek yogurt and adding cucumbers, lemon and garlic.

oday, my wife and I are proud to be the third generation to continue our family legacy at Parthenon Gyros. We’re forever grateful to the millions of Parthenon fans who have embraced us wholeheartedly for all these years and who inspire us to continue to serve the best homemade, iconic Gyros in the country!

Σας ευχαριστούμε, με αγάπη (We Thank You All, with Love),

Dimitri and Erin

Feed the Need 2017 Highlights

Feed the Need 2017 was a great success!

This past Sunday, April 2, marked the second Feed the Need tasting event, benefiting The River Food Pantry.

Back in 2015, the Madison Originals board of directors were in discussion about their desire for our organization to do more to help and connect with our community, and for the restaurants in our organization to find ways to collaborate with one another. We decided a good starting point would be to find one local charity to partner with, and for that cause to be our primary 2016 focus. The more we talked, the more we realized it would make sense if this cause had some kind of food or hunger-related component. Also, we wanted to work with an organization that was big enough to make a difference in our community, but small enough that the impact our small organization made would be felt.

By luck and happenstance, The River Food Pantry was planning their 10 year anniversary celebration at the same time. We invited them to a board meeting at the Daisy Cafe, and came away from it excited and motivated. What was meant to be a one-year, one-off event just celebrated its second year, and we hope it's just the beginning of bringing awareness and much needed funds to Madison's busiest food pantry.

This year, nineteen Madison Originals members got together to donate their time, food, drinks, and talents, all in the name of stopping hunger. Participants included Imperial Garden, Manna Cafe & Bakery, Banzo, Lombardino's, Daisy Cafe & Cupcakery, Essen Haus, Ian's Pizza, Brasserie V, Bonfyre American Grille, The Old Fashioned, Charlie's on Main, Liliana's, The Roman Candle Pizzeria, Nitty Gritty, Sprecher's Pub, Porta Bella, Wollersheim Winery & Distillery, Yahara Bay Distillery, and J.Henry & Sons Bourbon.

Here's a look at the mouth-watering menus they put together:

Madison Originals member Dotty Dumpling's Dowry, along with National Guardian Life, stepped up as presenting sponsors.

Sarah and Rachael of Dotty Dumpling's Dowry take a break from volunteering at The River Food Pantry to pose with the Feed the Need mascot Phillup Fork.

Besides the great food and drinks, there was plenty of fun to go around! There was a photo booth featuring Feed the Need mascot Phillup Fork and a new human-size spoon, a wine pull, and two 50/50 raffles. (Both 50/50 raffle winners donating their prize money back to The River! How's that for generosity?)

Preparing for the wine pull

Madison Originals members donated over $900 in gift cards and other gifts for the live auction Madison Originals gift basket, which went for $1,450 to the highest bidder!

Thank you to the generous restaurants in our group! Your donations resulted in $1,450 more going to The River Food Pantry!

Special guest Kyle Cherek of Emmy Award-winning Wisconsin Foodie did a great job as host and auctioneer.

Expressively You portrait artist Lindsey LaPlant was onsite, creating her expressive portraits of event attendees.

Beer was provided by Ale Asylum.

This year's event took place at Madison College's beautiful, new, state-of-the art culinary space at the Truax campus. This was the first culinary event in Madison College's new space. Forty-four students and three alumni helped with the event, assisting Madison Originals chefs with all aspects of the day's work, from hauling food and supplies in and out, to prepping and serving food.

Madison College culinary students show off their homemade orange soda.

There was great live music from local musicians! Sortin' the Mail, Erin Krebs Duo, and Cliff Frederiksen all did a super job entertaining the crowd.

Sortin' the Mail entertains the crowd

Throughout the planning process, our associate members and partners stepped up to discount or donate their time, advertising space, supplies, and funds, along with helping to spread awareness about this event, making it even more successful than last year! From shuttle rides to paper plates, on-air ads to prizes for giveaways, social media shout-outs and everything in between, their collective support made a big impact! Please help us recognize everyone at Madison Essentialsmagazine, BRAVA magazine, the Greater Madison Convention and Visitor's Bureau, NBC15, Madisonmagazine, Complete Office of Wisconsin, Boardman & Clark, Midwest Family Broadcasting, CityTins, Dane Buy Local, Isthmus, The Edgerton Reporter, Towns & Associates, and Union Cab! Thank you all, along with everyone else on the Feed the Need planning committee and within our community who helped make this event a success.

Finally, thanks to everyone who attended Feed the Need! Your generous support netted over $40,000 for The River Food Pantry, beating this year's $35,000 goal by $5,000! WOW!

This is enough money to provide meals for pantry shoppers for three months!

Check out The River Food Pantry's blog, here, for more details and a complete list of sponsors.

One FIRST PLACE PRIZE: Two tickets to The River Food Pantry Feed the Need event on Sunday June 5, 3:00- 6:00 p.m. at the East Side Club in Madison, Wisconsin, and $50 Gift Certificate to a Madison Originals member restaurant selected by Sponsor.

One SECOND PLACE PRIZE: $25 Gift Certificate to a Madison Originals member restaurant selected by Sponsor.

One THIRD PLACE PRIZE: $25 Gift Certificate to a Madison Originals member restaurant selected by Sponsor.

PRIZES MAY BE SUBJECT TO TAX; ALL APPLICABLE TAXES ARE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE WINNER. All federal, state and local laws and regulations apply. Void where prohibited.

ENTRY PERIOD: The Contest starts at 12:00:01 AM Central Daylight Time (CDT) on May 12, 2016 and eligible contestants may submit entries until 11:59:59 PM CDT on May 18, 2016 (the “Entry Period”). Entries submitted after the Entry Period will be deemed ineligible to win. The Contest ends on May 20, 2016. The period between May 12, 2016 and May 20, 2016, is referred to in the Rules as the “Contest Period.”

ELIGIBILITY: The Contest is open only to individuals, 18 years or older at time of entry, who are legal residents of Wisconsin. Non-Wisconsin residents and employees of The River Food Pantry, Inc. or Madison Originals, Inc. and their immediate families (defined as parents, children, siblings, spouse and grandparents), and those domiciled with any of the foregoing are not eligible.

HOW TO ENTER: NO PURCHASE NECESSARY. To be entered into the contest, visit the Madison Originals, Inc. Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Madison-Originals-107851205930781/?fref=nf and post a comment with a suggested name (a “Name Suggestion”) on the Name That Fork! Post.

Submissions to the Contest must be received during the Entry Period in order to be eligible; Name Suggestions received after that date will be deemed ineligible to win. Submitted Name Suggestions will not be acknowledged or returned; Sponsor is not responsible for lost, late, inaccurate, incomplete, damaged, illegible, or misdirected entries.

Each Name Suggestion must be submitted on an individual basis (i.e., no team, joint, or corporate entries) and all components of the Name Suggestion must be the original creation of the submitting participant. Entrants may submit one Name Suggestion per day. Multiple entries will disqualify all the entrant’s entries. Entries will be deemed submitted by the authorized account holder of the Facebook account used to submit the entry. If two entrants submit the same Name Suggestion, the earliest posted qualified Name Suggestion will be used and the others disqualified.

Only non-commercial work may be submitted. Name Suggestions may not contain profanity, anti-competition messages, illegal material, or material that violates the rights of third parties or Facebook posting rules. Name Suggestions may not include confidential information, trade secrets, trademarks, or copyrighted material belonging to any person or entity other than the entrant, absent a suitable license or permission agreement, proof of which is required. Name Suggestions containing any forbidden matter or material otherwise deemed by Sponsor to be inappropriate will be disqualified and posts containing them may be deleted. If a Name Suggestion contains a brand name product or a trademark other than one belonging to Sponsor, Sponsor may disqualify the Name Suggestion or, at its sole discretion, remove the brand name or trademark from the Name Suggestion prior to judging without notice to entrant.

All submitted Name Suggestions become the property of Sponsor. Sponsor may, but is not required to, use any of the Name Suggestions or permutations of any of them.

RELEASE: By participating in the Contest, (a) you release Sponsor and its affiliates, subsidiaries, employees, directors, officers, and agents from any and all liability, claims, or actions of any kind for injuries, damages, or losses to persons and property that may be sustained in connection with the receipt, ownership, possession, use, or misuse of any prize; and (b) you release Facebook, Inc., its affiliates, subsidiaries, employees, directors, officers, and agents from any and all liability, claims, or actions of any kind for injuries, damages or losses to persons and property which may be sustained in connection with the Contest.

Round 1: Initial Selection by Panel of Judges.

A panel of judges consisting of Sponsor personnel will select three Name Suggestions for consumer voting based equally upon the criteria of creative use of the Sponsor Product, originality, and adherence to these Official Rules. Three will be notified on May 19, 2016.

Round 2: Consumer Voting on Facebook.

The three Name Suggestions selected by Sponsor will be made available online for voting on the Madison Originals, Inc. Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/Madison-Originals-107851205930781/?fref=nf , beginning 8:00:00 AM CDT May 19, 2016, and ending 4:59:59 PM CDT May 20, 2016 (the “Voting Period”).

The Sponsor will create a separate Facebook Album with the three Name Suggestions. During the Voting Period, Facebook users will be able to vote for their favorite Name Suggestion by liking one of the Name Suggestions in the Facebook Album.

Facebook users will be instructed to only vote for one Name Suggestion during the Voting Period. Entrants are prohibited from obtaining votes by any fraudulent or inappropriate means, including, without limitation, paying for votes; offering prizes or inducements; agreeing to exchange votes with another person; offering any consideration or incentive of any kind to persons in exchange for votes; or other means as determined by Sponsor in its sole discretion. Any attempt by an entrant or any other individual to obtain votes using any mechanism that violates these Official Rules or any other kind of fraudulent or inappropriate mechanism, as determined by Sponsor in its sole discretion, shall give Sponsor the right to void the votes in question and/or disqualify the entrant, in Sponsor’s sole discretion.

Votes must be entered manually through Facebook. Votes generated by script, macro, bot, or other automated means or which subvert or impair the integrity of the voting process will be void, as determined by Sponsor in its sole discretion. Voting must be completed by the actual person or business casting the vote.

The Name Suggestion receiving the most eligible votes will receive the FIRST PLACE PRIZE, the Name Suggestion receiving the next most eligible votes will receive the SECOND PLACE PRIZE, and the remaining Name Suggestion will win the THIRD PLACE PRIZE.

PRIZE AWARDS: Prizes will be awarded within 10 days after winner verification. No prize substitution or transfer is permitted, except that Sponsor reserves the right to substitute a prize of equal or greater value, for any reason. Sponsor may be required by law to report prize values to taxing authorities; all taxes and any other incidental expenses on prizes are the sole responsibility of each winner.

WINNER’S LIST: For the names of prize winners, send a self-addressed, stamped No. 10 envelope to: Madison Originals, Inc., “Name that Fork! Contest” Prize Winners, PO Box 259501, Madison, WI 53725. All requests for the winners list must be received by September 1, 2016.

All winners will be notified of final prize(s) on or about May 21, 2016. By entering, you agree to be bound by these Official Rules, and that the decisions of the judges are final and binding in all respects. Sponsor reserves the right not to select any winning submissions based upon the quality or content of submissions. Potential winners may be required to sign and return a sworn Affidavit of Eligibility and Liability and Publicity Release. If required documentation is not returned within five business days of notification or if notification is returned as undeliverable, any prize will be forfeited and an alternate winner will be selected.

Sponsor is not responsible for technical, hardware, or software failures or other errors or problems that may occur in connection with the Contest, whether computer, network, mechanical, typographical, printing, human, or otherwise, including, without limitation, errors or problems that may occur in connection with the administration of the Contest, the processing or judging of entries, the announcement of the prizes, in any Contest-related materials, or that may limit prize fulfillment or a participant’s ability to enter the Contest.

Sponsor reserves the right to amend these Official Rules and to disqualify permanently from the Contest any person it believes has intentionally violated these Official Rules.
